comfort downloadMy love affair with the Basque Country began the way most of my travel fantasies do…by watching Anthony Bourdain eat, drink, and navigate through a foreign city! In this case, that city was San Sebastian in Spain. I recall watching that particular Spain episode of No Reservations and being completely captivated by the picturesque mountains, the sparkling city by the sea, and the magnificent cuisine offered in such a tiny city which is home to more Michelin stars than Paris itself! From that point on, I dreamed of my own pilgrimage to what is known as the Mecca for global gastronomes.

define In April of 2012, Emerson and I decided that a trip to Spain was in order and obviously, a visit to the Basque Country was top on our list. I found that the toughest decision of planning our stay would be “Where should we eat?” as the culinary offerings far exceeded the amount of time we had in town. Also, we were both on a budget, and as it was our first time in Spain, we really weren’t sure how much money we would be spending in other cities; so we played it safe and decided we would splurge on one three Michelin star meal and it would be at the famed, Arzak. The remainder of the time we would do as the locals do and pintxo crawl from bar to bar in the Parte Vieja (Old Town) area of San Sebastian sampling tapas and sipping txacoli.

restrict While San Sebastian has an airport of its own in town, it’s often cheaper to fly into nearby Bilbao (as we did our first time visiting Basque Country) or another option as we did this past April, we flew into Bordeaux and drove 2 hours through French Basque country and stopped in fabulous Biarritz along the way. The hour long drive from Bilbao to San Sebastian was absolutely gorgeous, albeit, with challenges of its own such as navigating toll booths, choosing the wrong lane for cash payment, and having to reverse (and make other cars reverse) on the highway, but boy was it worth it! Driving through the mountains while admiring the green hills, countless livestock, and beautiful Basque style farmhouses could not have provided a more gorgeous welcome to the jewel of the Basque Country, San Sebastian.

modern warfare 2 matchmaking server San Sebastian, or as the locals call it ‘Donostia’ is truly one of the most charming and beautiful cities I have ever visited! In fact, if given the opportunity to move, it’s the only city I would consider leaving Los Angeles for! Breakfast on the beach at La Perla is the perfect place to enjoy your morning coffee and Tortilla Espanola while taking in the views of the famous La Concha Beach and Monte Urgell with its giant statue of Jesus. An easy hike to the top of Monte Urgell takes about 20 minutes and is an absolute must as the views of the city and sea from the top of the mountain cannot be beat! Take the funicular to the top of Monte Igueldo, the vantage point from the summit provides the most amazing panoramic views of La Concha Beach, the city, and Isla del Santa Clara, a photo op cannot be missed here! If you bring the kids along, there is a small and a bit outdated amusement park at the top of Monte Igueldo that they might enjoy.

single laatzen The Basque people could not have been more welcoming and kind to us. While our plan was to aimlessly wander the narrow streets of the city in search of amazing cuisine, we were lucky enough to meet the most wonderful people who provided us with a map detailing which pintxo bars to visit, and what to order from each one, a definite plus to navigating the food scene! If you’re planning to visit Donostia and want the most memorable custom experiences curated by a true insider, you must visit/contact Leire Falcon at Tenedor Tours  located inside the Hotel Londres at La Concha Beach. No one knows the ins and outs of Basque Country like Leire! Her recommendations and passion for the city are the reason we fell in love with all things Basque. Allow her to schedule a tour to the nearby seaside city of Getaria where you can gorge on the most remarkable fresh seafood, relax on the beach, or pay a visit to the Balenciaga Museum, and take advantage of the panoramic views from the terrace on top of the San Salvador Church.

site rencontre 3e age Another wonderful day trip is just a 20 minute drive over the French border to the luxurious seaside resort town of Biarritz. Biarritz was the go-to vacation spot of European royalty back in the 1800’s and one visit to this gorgeous city and you will see why, everywhere you look is worthy of a postcard picture in Biarritz! It’s also a world renowned surf spot and is said to be the birthplace of surfing in Europe. There are many famous beaches in Biarritz, Le Grande Plage with its lighthouse in the distance is straight out of a storybook while Plage Port Vieux is a tiny and perfect beach for swimming. The beautiful little French town is home to many seaside restaurants, boutiques, and a number of very serious patisseries and chocolatiers in addition to the Musee du Chocolat. A visit to French Basque country is a must as it is so easily accessible from San Sebastian.
